Avalanche Beacons: Lifesavers in the Mountains

Anavalanche beaconis an essential tool for anyone venturing into snow-covered mountain regions—whether you’re ski touring, freeriding, or snowshoeing. This compact, portable device can save lives by helping locate buried individuals quickly in the event of an avalanche. To use it effectively in an emergency, it is essential to attend an avalanche safety course and practice regularly with the device.

What is an Avalanche Beacon?

An avalanche beacon is an electronic tool with two main functions:

  1. Transmit: In normal mode, the device continuously transmits a signal.
  2. Receive: In search mode, the device can detect signals from other beacons to locate buried victims.

Why is an Avalanche Beacon Important?

In an avalanche emergency, every second counts. The chances of survival for buried victims are highest within the first 15 minutes. An avalanche beacon allows rescuers to use this critical time effectively to pinpoint the victims’ location.

How Does an Avalanche Beacon Work?

Beacons operate on a standardized frequency of 457 kHz, enabling compatibility across different models and brands. Modern avalanche beacons also feature useful functions, such as:

  • Protection against interferencesin SEND mode (IPS)
  • Marking functionsfor multiple burials
  • Automatic switchingin case of secondary avalanches
  • User-friendly interfacesfor easy operation

Safety Starts with Training
